First, The Child: Smaller Class Sizes for Early Childhood Development

First, The Child is a blog series developed by FPPK to explore the school’s progressive approach to education. The following article in this series explores how our superior teacher to child ratio benefits children. Smaller ratios allow teachers to focus on each child’s needs, while still providing children with a group setting to learn how to share, play, work with others, and develop empathy toward their classmates.

Benefits of Smaller Class Sizes for Early Childhood Development

“Our smaller class sizes allow our teachers to focus on the individual needs of each child,” said Kristina Satchell, FPPK’s director. “Our students get focused attention, where our teachers can tailor their lessons to the child’s learning style. The children also feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes in a caring environment with the other students and teachers. This supportive setting prepares children for success, helping them grow into more confident individuals. ”

Social and Emotional Growth

In the preschool and kindergarten years, children begin to form relationships outside of the home environment, with other children and teachers. By building a close-knit, classroom-based community, educators develop an environment that promotes positive behaviors and active participation. A school setting with smaller groups allows children to create deeper connections and learn emotional regulation with the gentle guidance of teachers.

Intellectual and Academic Development
Small class sizes allow for more immersive and hands-on learning experiences, such as creating art, making music, gardening projects, and conducting scientific experiments. In smaller groups, children are not overlooked; they are recognized for their talents and abilities, which tends to make them more engaged than those who feel crowded or unseen. A smaller class size also means a more intimate, focused learning environment with fewer distractions.
