First, The Child: Outdoor Play Spaces for Early Childhood Development
First, The Child is a blog series developed by FPPK to explore the school’s progressive approach to education. This next article in the series explores how our beautiful, spacious indoor and outdoor play spaces benefit our preschool and kindergarten children—physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
Benefits of Indoor and Outdoor Play Spaces for Early Childhood Development
“Play is an essential part of learning,” said Kristina Satchell, FPPK’s director. “Our vibrant outdoor play area, complete with a children’s garden, and our spacious indoor gymnasium give our children many opportunities to grow and thrive, rain or shine. Whether exploring nature, developing coordination, or building friendships, children strengthen their skills through play.”
Strengthens Physical Growth
Growing children need spaces where they can strengthen their muscles and bones, as well as improve their developing balance and coordination. In early childhood, children improve their gross motor skills by climbing, running, and balancing on equipment. The school’s sprawling outdoor playground and equipment, and spacious gymnasium encourage active play. Fresh outdoor air and exposure to sunshine are crucial for a strong immune system.
Stimulates Intellectual Development
The children’s garden sparks their curiosity about biology and the life cycle through hands-on exploration and observation. These activities help them connect with nature and develop a sense of responsibility for the environment around them. The open-ended playground equipment encourages children to invent games and use their imagination to be creative. It also boosts critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. The sights, sounds, and scents of nature also stimulate a child’s senses.
Encourages Socialization & Emotional Growth
The playground and physical activities in the gym facilitate interactions between the children, fostering cooperation, empathy, and communication skills. Children who spend time outside playing or indoors in the gymnasium also reduce stress and anxiety, giving children a brain break from active learning. Through playing games with their peers, children learn patience, resilience, and self-confidence. These skills help children develop and strengthen their emotional regulation.
