First, the Child: Embracing Diversity in a Learning Environment
First, The Child Series
First, The Child is a blog series developed by FPPK to explore the school’s progressive approach to education. We embrace diversity and inclusion to enrich a child’s learning experience.
The Importance of Embracing Diversity in a Learning Environment
Children thrive when they feel represented and valued for their unique backgrounds. They feel seen, heard, and understood and are more likely to engage and trust that their teachers and schools respect them and their families. At this age, they also learn that other children may have their own stories and cultures and develop a mutual respect for others. This mutual understanding is at the core of building empathy and compassion for others.
Celebrating Our Children’s Uniqueness Enhances Learning
Including our children’s cultures (including but not limited to languages, celebrations, family life) enriches topics and discussions in our classroom setting.
Honoring cultures different from our own prepares our children for a multicultural, diverse world.
Teachers embrace our children for their individuality and identity, strengthening the bond between teacher and child.
“At FPPK, we put the child at the center of everything we do. We acknowledge each child’s unique personality and abilities. To do that effectively, we look at everything that influences that child, from family structure and culture to their unique learning abilities and areas needing more attention,” said Kristina Satchell, FPPK’s director.
“For example, let’s say a child is enthusiastic about reading time but struggles with separating from a parent at morning dropoff. We honor what a child feels excited to do and incorporate that into helping a child transition. Seeing the child, recognizing their abilities, and putting their challenges into perspective is how we learn what a child needs for success in the learning environment,” adds Satchell.
First Presbyterian Preschool and Kindergarten is a child-centered, family-driven school located on the beautiful grounds of the First Presbyterian Church in Englewood, New Jersey. Our nurturing program serves children 2 to kindergarten age and is non-sectarian, meaning we do not provide religious instruction.
We offer each child the care and compassion they need to become confident and engaged lifelong learners. It's where they start that helps them finish. Learn more about giving your child the right start at FPPK School.
