First, The Child: Age Groupings
First, The Child Series
First, The Child is a blog series developed by FPPK to explore the school’s progressive approach to education. The following article in this series explores the different age-based classroom groupings at FPPK.
Our Classroom Age Groupings Meet Children Where They Are
At FPPK, we thoughtfully design our four age-grouped classrooms to support our students at each stage of their development—2-year-old classroom, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds, and kindergarten. In each of these classrooms, every child can grow, explore, and learn at a pace that feels right for them. These groupings allow teachers to meet children exactly where they are developmentally, emotionally, and socially.
2-year-olds: Toddlers benefit from routines, materials, and activities that align with their growing independence, language development, and curiosity. When children learn alongside peers at similar stages, they gain confidence, build social skills more naturally, and feel empowered to try new things without pressure.
3-year-olds: As they deepen their language skills, 3-year-olds can more effectively express their feelings and communicate their needs. We foster self-expression while establishing a safe, collaborative environment.
4-year-olds: As children grow, each classroom intentionally builds on the last. Four-year-olds are deepening their problem-solving skills and becoming more comfortable working and playing alongside others.
Kindergarten: By age 5, children have developed greater stamina. They have been strengthening their focus, understanding instructions, and demonstrating academic readiness. Their curiosity and thirst for knowledge drive them to learn joyfully and confidently.
By honoring each stage of development, our classrooms provide a strong foundation for encouraging lifelong learners. We ensure every child feels seen, supported, and capable from the start.
First Presbyterian Preschool and Kindergarten is a child-centered, family-driven school located on the beautiful grounds of the First Presbyterian Church in Englewood, New Jersey. Our nurturing program serves children age 2 to kindergarten age and is non-sectarian, meaning we do not provide religious instruction.
We offer each child the care and compassion they need to become confident and engaged lifelong learners. It's where they start that helps them finish. Learn more about giving your child the right start at FPPK School.
